Buffalo Chicken Burgers

1 lb ground chicken
1/2 cup panko crumbs
1/3 cup buffalo wing sauce
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion, minced

to serve:
split crusty rolls
blue cheese dressing
celery sticks

In a bowl, mix together all of the burger ingredients by hand. Do not over work the meat. Gently form into 4 patties. Spray with cooking spray or add 1 tablespoon oil to a large skillet. Heat, then add the burgers, cooking 2-4 minutes on each side. Place on rolls, top with dressing and serve with celery sticks.

My thoughts:

My husband loves wings although we rarely have them. We’ve made them at home but it is a fair amount of work for something I personally I am not too fond of. I appreciate the idea but gnawing tiny bits of chicken off a teensy bone just isn’t my idea of a good time. Enter the burger-all of the flavor if buffalo wings but none of the fuss.

    It seems like using as least part dark meat in the grind would make the burgers extra juicy and give it a more authentic taste.

  2. I love buffalo chicken sandwiches almost as much as I love eating wings. This looks much healthier and is less barbaric without all the scattered bones!

  4. I am from buffalo and unless you have had wings from where they originated, you just can’t compare. I have had wings outside buffalo and am amazed for what passes for “wings”. Come to buffalo and have wings at The Anchor Bar or Duffs and then try and say they don’t whet your appetite.

  5. This looks like a great, easy recipe and I’m definitely going to try it come Game Day. Where does one get panko crumbs in the Charm City area?

    Also, I don’t know that this is “less fuss” than making the original wings, although at least you don’t have to contend with dealing with chewed-up bones at the end.

  6. Claude: Panko is easy to find locally, just about every Safeway/Whole Foods/Superfresh has it.

    And I do think making this burger is “less fuss” than lightly breading and deep frying wings and tossing them with sauce which takes twice as long and is much more messy.

  9. I *love* wings. My husband does not. So I only get them when we do takeout! I’ve seen sandwiches like these on the menu – and I’m sure the previous commenter is right. It has to be a much more healthful choice!

  12. What a good idea to mix the buffalo sauce into the burgers rather than just pour it on top like ketchup. I can’t wait to try it. In your directions you start out, “Meanwhile,…” Were we supposed to be doing something before that?

  14. Oh! There’s your difference. I put ’em in the oven (450 degrees, 20-25 min per side) without breading. Then I give them a quick saute in the sauce. Less work and slightly less fat (because I’m still using butter as part of my wing sauce).

    Either way, it doesn’t take away from the coolness of your recipe.

    I guess the Hot Wings are kind of up there with Chili in that there are about as many ways to do them as there are people who make them.

  15. I can’t believe that I never thought to make something like this before. My boyfriend loves buffalo wings so much that he puts the sauce on EVERYTHING…regular burgers, grilled chicken, salads, chicken noodle soup…you name it. I made this tonight and we both just loved it. mmmm!
